The Backroom supports Kells Stock 2008
Kells-Stock | October 17 2008
On October 17th original music bands new and old will come together to raise money for charities. The venue is VIBE nightclub at the Headfort Arms Hotel in Kells, Co. Meath. The money raised will be given to the Jack and Jill Foundation and to the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre in Drogheada.
Kells-Stock is about raising money for these charities, and about bringing together some of the past and present crop of bands and solo artists that have emerged from the Kells Area. For many years Kells has had a heritage for producing talented music acts and this night will be a celebration of that.
HAM SANDWICH http://www.myspace.com/eathamsandwich Kells based Ham Sandwich are having a great year. Their debut album “Carry The Meek” was released to rave reviews. They received a Meteor Music Award. They have played at major music festivals including an appearance at Glastonbury in the UK. An unforgettable appearance on the Late Late show, thanks to a certain superhero suit - and they even managed to get through the Podge and Rodge show on RTE without emotional bruises. Ham Sandwich are John Moore, Podge McNamee, Ollie Murphy, Brian Darcy and Niamh Farrell
Here’s what the Irish Times had to say about Carry The Meek earlier this year - Eclectic without being all over the place, judiciously selecting choice harmonies over dissonance, and boasting arrangements that favour subtlety over swagger, Ham Sandwich deliver, with an apparent minimum of fuss, a mini triumph. -
THE VANWINKLES return to the stage after a 10 year abscene on the music scene. Martin Flanaghan (guitar and vocals) and Greg Smith (drums) are both original members of the group. The position of bassist has changed hands through the years but for a number of years now Derek Finnegan has been at the helm. In years gone by the Vanwinkles enjoyed success with their catchy pop/rock tunes playing venues like the Baggot Inn and The Rock Garden – as well as the Hot Press Party in The Point depot. In the 1990’s they had songs included on Danceline’s best of unsigned Irish band compilation albums.
Antony Cregan (with members of Little Palace) Six-piece band - Little Palace - had much success on the recording and live scene in the 1990’s until the band parted company in 1997. The soaring melodies and lyrics pouring with imagry were mainly penned by Kells-man, Michael Brunnock, who continues to release records and perform in the USA. As the only lead vocalist member available to represent Little Palace, Antony Cregan will delight by giving us a small selection of songs by the band. Its ten years since many of these songs have had a live airing. Originally a six-piece outfit with three lead vocalists, Antony will be backed up by original members Martin Quinn on guitar, James Quinn on Keyboards and Ian Melady on percussion.
SLUMP blow the dust off their reggae songbook to make an appearance on the night. Kells is an unlikely place to find an original reggae band – which is probably the best reason in the world to form one! Original members are Patrick Morris, Martin Lydon, Joey Burns, Ces Cole and Andrew (Sid) Clarke.
FIONA MELADY http://www.myspace.com/fionamelady Fiona releases her debut solo album on the 16th of October called “The fear I fear”. She will join the KellsStock lineup on the 17th. The title track will also be the first single. Fiona’s music is an eclectic mix of pop, rock and jazz with inlfluences from Etta James to Bjork.
Over the past few years Fiona has been touring / recording with highly regarded artists (Paddy Casey, Declan O’Rourke, Gemma Hayes). For a time Fiona was also a part of Kells band TURN. Last December she sang a cover of "Apple tree" on the Bulmers/Magners Christmas TV advertisement. Autumn 2008 see’s her stepping centre stage.
MOE-JOE – the brainchild of eternal Kells rocker and veteran jammer, guitarist Matthew Barrat airs newly written material for the first time. Bassist Daois and Drummer Andrew Quinn will be the backbone of Moe-Joe for their spot on the night. Matthew has played with an endless list of original and cover bands in the locality including Say La V. Andrew and Daois are paired together for the first time after the ceasation of another Kells rock band, McBane, last year.
THE CHERRIES http://www.myspace.com/bitethecherries Tony Clayton-Lea, music critic with The Irish Times sums it up - 'Fronted by Kells woman Gemma McGowan and musically engineered by Drogheda musician Joanne Kieran (with assistance from Rosanna Schwarzacher ..o and Jareth Tait on drums), The Cherries fuse a kind of cabaret sound (hints of Brecht/Weill) with a challenging dynamism last heard on long lost albums by Laura Nyro. They're not to everyones taste, which means there has to be something good going on, and have just released they're debut album 'Vertigo Girl':
Fred Cooke (Comedian) http://www.myspace.com/cooksterfred Originally from Kells, busy comic Fred Cooke will MC the night and make us smile! Fred enjoys a busy schedule in the comedy clubs circuit around the country and beyond.
About the charities
JACK and JILL Foundation The Foundation provides early intervention home respite to families with children up to the age of 4, with severe neuro developmental delay and palliative conditions requiring extensive medical and nursing care at home. The Jack & Jill Foundation supports families to cope with the situation they find themselves in with their new baby or older child.
GARY KELLY CENTRE The Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre is situated in Georges Street, Drogheda, Co. Louth. It is a centre of reflections, retreat and recovery.
Gary Kelly, a professional footballer at Leeds United FC and International Irish squad donated three quarters of a million euro (proceeds of Gary’s Testimonial match held 7th May 2002 at Leeds) to a cancer-related project in Drogheda.. Many of the local businesses matched Gary’s generosity by donating time, material and labour to the project. Mandy Weldon, sister of Gary, died in 1998 through Brest Cancer and the memory of Mandy prompted Gary to put something back from his successful career in soccer.
